The overall reed sensor market is expected to grow from USD 1.49 billion
in 2017 to USD 2.30 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 7.40% from 2018 to
2023. Reed sensors offer several advantages, such as simple and reliable
sensing and actuation capabilities; low cost and zero power requirement
for operation; and safe to use in harsh industrial environments, which,
in turn, help in the growth of the market.

A reed sensor is a hermetically sealed
electromagnetic sensor operated by an applied magnetic field generated
by either a permanent magnet or current-carrying coil. Reed sensors are
used for sensing and detecting movement, proximity, metal detection, and
liquid level and flow measurement. It consists of 2 or more metal reed
contacts (blades) that are hermetically sealed inside a glass capsule
containing inert gas to prevent the activation of contacts. The contacts
can be normally open, which closes in the presence of magnetic field,
and normally closed, which opens when a magnetic field is applied.
The reed sensor market has been segmented on the
basis of contact position into Form A, Form B, Form C, and others. The
market for Form A sensors is expected to grow at the highest CAGR from
2018 to 2023. Form A is the most common reed sensor. The high adoption
of Form A reed sensors in automotive and consumer appliances contribute
to the rapid growth of the market.
The reed sensor market in APAC is expected to grow at
the highest CAGR during the forecast period. APAC is the
fastest-growing market for reed sensors. The rise in disposable income
in APAC countries has led to the increase in the demand for vehicles and
consumer appliances, which, in turn, increased the growth of the reed
sensor market in this region. The increasing penetration of reed sensors
and the influx of global players, along with the emergence of native
players, are contributing to the growth of the market. As a result, APAC
holds a significant share of the overall market.
Automotive & Transportation
Automotive and transportation is one of those
applications where reed sensors are extensively used for various
purposes. The reed sensors are used in vehicles such as heavy-duty
trucks, airplanes, trains, motorcycles, E-cars, and E-bikes. The reed
sensors can be deployed for measurement of brake pressure, coolant
level, windshield, tire pressure monitoring, liquid level detection,
HVAC controls, and emissions, among others. Apart from the basic
functions in a vehicle, it is used in seat belt detection, anti-theft
alarm, and door latch sensors, among others.
Consumer Electronics & Appliances
Reed sensors are used for various applications such
as consumer appliances, HVAC, and lighting. In appliances, reed sensors
are used in various products such as dishwasher, oven, microwave,
refrigerator, ice maker, and washer and dryer; for HVAC plumbing, it is
used for applications such as air-conditioner compressor and condensers,
gas smart meter, water flow sensor, and instant water heater.
Robotics & Automation&
In the robotics and automation application, reed
sensors are used for various applications such as robotic arm movement
(pick and place), visual indication (alarm), liquid flow and level
monitoring, inventory management systems, and machinery ignition
systems. Reed sensors are used as proximity sensors to control robotic
motion, conveyor speed, location, and angle.
Healthcare
Sensors play an important role in the durability of
medical devices and healthcare systems. Reed sensors are widely used in
applications such as sensing end position, medical mobility equipment,
hospital beds, lift chair position, power wheelchair, and mobility
scooter. In such applications, reed sensors are required to provide
enhanced reliability and high sensitivity to ensure patient or user
safety.
Critical questions the report answers:
- How are these developments beneficial to the industry for mid and long term?
- What are the upcoming industry applications for reed sensors?
The size of reed sensors is a major factor
restraining the growth of the market. With the advancement of
technology, the size of most consumer electronics, such as smartphones,
TV, and laptops, has reduced to a large extent. The relatively large
size of reed sensors causes an obstruction in product miniaturization.
This has led consumer electronics goods manufacturers to utilize
miniscule sensors with capabilities to perform similar tasks. For
instance, reed sensors and the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR)
sensors with about the same sensitivity range, reed sensors are
significantly larger than AMR sensors. This allows designers to develop
smaller, more reliable, and higher quality appliances and devices with
virtually no power required by the sensor components.
Key players in the market include Littelfuse (US),
HSI Sensing (US), RMCIP (Russia), Standex-Meder Electronics (US), PIC
GmbH (Germany), Coto Technology (US), Pickering Electronics (UK), Aleph
America (US), STG Germany GmbH (Germany), and Zhejiang Xurui Electronic
(China). These players are increasingly undertaking mergers and
acquisitions, and product launches to develop and introduce new
technologies and products in the market.
